Tot School: Farm Theme

Summer is 22 months old.

In March, Summer became the big sister to Kaitlyn Rose.  She has done an amazing job transitioning in her new role and I love seeing them interact with one another. I, on the other hand, have been challenged in balancing my time in so many different directions...most of my time going to planning/teaching Abby's Kindergarten lessons. I was thrilled to be able to finally find the opportunity to plan a week of activities for Summer. After seeing her excitement, I will definitely be making it high priority.

While unpacking from our recent move, I stumbled upon several farm themed toys and books.
I thought it would be a perfect way to kick start 'Tot School' again.

Her shelf set up:

Set Up

Top shelf (left to right): farm animal puzzle, animal flashcards with matching toy animals, lentils with various tools for pouring, transferring and funneling.
Bottom shelf (left to right): sensory tray with dry oats and toy animals, magnetic pom pom printable, matching farm animal printable.
**We used farm themed printables from Katie @ The Gift of Curiosity.**

She couldn't wait to explore her shelf when she walked in.  We've tried puzzles in the past with her showing no interest, but it was by far her favorite activity.

Puzzle

We attempted to match the animals with the animal flashcards, but she was more interested in exploring each animal and listening to their unique sound.

Then, she played...for quite awhile.

Playing Farm

I thought she would love adding her animals to the dried oat sensory crate, but I was wrong.  She ended up more concerned about picking up individual oats that fell on the floor...

But...there's always one thing I know she will enjoy and that's her books.  This girl loves reading.  I am amazed at her attention span and concentration at this age when it comes to reading...

I set out a small basket with board books for her to look through...

And, she spent time exploring the outdoors...

  1. You have such great ideas to go with the farm theme! I am just starting tot school with my 18 mo old daughter (& I'm due to have my son in 4 weeks!!) I love the idea of the shelf with a different activity in each cube! I am going to have to keep my eye out for something similar for her!

    1. Thank you, Brandi! Wow...sounds like your two will have a very similar age gap. I found our particular shelf at Target, I believe it's Threshold brand. Best of luck to you!

  2. Congratulatlations on your new addition plus your new home. Summer seems to be adjusting to her new role as "Big Sister" just beautifully. What an interesting way to display her learning tools. She has that deep concentrating look on her cute face. It is probably fin to read to her since she enjoys books so much. You can see it in little face. Keep up the fantastic work.
