K4- RRSK: Cc, YCR: Units 8 and 9 and Arctic Theme

Abby is 4 years old
and
Summer is 6 months old.
It's hard to believe how much Abby has matured these past few months.  Her attention span is gradually increasing, she's beginning to enjoy (to a certain extent) many activities she was not interested in before (coloring, tracing, writing) and her love for learning is incredibly motivating!

You can learn more about the K4 Curriculum here, which we are currently using as our base.
Our theme this week was Arctic Animals, we used printables from both 2 Teaching Mommies and Royal Baloo.
She worked on basic adding.
Her handwriting is looking better and better each week...she tells me she's been practicing. :-)
We worked on spelling some of her Arctic Animals.

She thought vowel blending and basic CVC words were fun!  We played with all sorts of combinations and she would "x" them off as she read.  We also watched several Leapfrog DVD's: Talking Words Factory and Talking Words Factory 2- Code Word Caper.

I mixed up her number puzzle and she was busy counting trying to rearrange them.

Rhyming words...

And, graphing...

Her game this week was Memory.

I also made Abby an Arctic sensory bin filled with miniature ice cube trays, blue and clear beads, white, silver and light blue pom poms, blue foam blocks, arctic themed cookie cutters and all the polar type stuffed animals and bath toys she has.  She LOVED it and many of her other animals decided to come play too!

I made some "snow" playdough with glitter and she used the cookie cutters to make cookies.

Then, she baked them in her "oven" and checked them to see if they were cooked thoroughly.

We are essentially picking up where Raising Rock Stars Preschool left off with Raising Rock Stars Kindergarten. We are reviewing the Bible verses she learned before, but using more challenging activities.

Bible Verse
Children, obey your parents in all things for this is well pleasing to the Lord.
Colossians 3:20

Tracing her verse...

Scissor practice and sorting (Animals and Non-Animals)

Units: 8 and 9
little, do, we, all, look, help, jump, for
Since Abby learned certain sight words on a weekly basis with Raising Rock Stars Preschool, I realized upon gathering Unit 8 that she knew 3 out of the 4 words.  With Unit 9, she was familiar with 1 of 4 so the combination of the two units gave her 4 new words this week.

She really enjoys these word puzzles.  I scramble them up and let her go!

We have also added Road Trip USA into our year.  My main goal with this program is to introduce Abby to the United States in a fun and exciting way and give her the opportunity to learn some basic history and facts.

This week we talked about Washington D.C., the White House and the President and looked at a few pictures.  Since she likes to dance and sing, I thought she could listen to a version of the States/Capitals song I learned when I was younger.  I still sing it today to help me remember.  I actually found a DVD version at our local library that highlights the state as they sing.  Just for fun..we started with the Southern Border states and in a week she picked up on it and will sing it almost by herself!
Here's a sample here.

This craft looked so neat! We used these Arctic animal templates and splattered paint using a toothbrush.  She wasn't sure about it at first, but then really enjoyed it.

And, then she went for something a little more abstract.

Then, the shaving cream came out.  We used it to write letters, sight words and then to just play.  I added in a few toys from her sensory bin and a little bit of cornstarch to make fluff...perfect for snowballs and mountains.

One of her science lessons this week was an introduction to a control and variable.  We used 6 white carnations ( 1 control and 5 variables) and food coloring. She poured the same amount of water in each identical cup and then we added different amounts of food coloring in each.  She made a hypothesis and was excited to see what happened.  We are using Janice VanCleave's Teaching the Fun of Science to Young Learners: Grades Pre-K through 2.

She also got a lesson in how flowers drink water and where the water goes.

Summer turned 6 months old this week!

And, ate her first solids..Super Porridge made with organic brown rice.  I am using Ruth Yaron's book, Super Baby Food.  I used the same food introduction schedule with Abby and she still eats Super Porridge today!  I highly recommend the book and believe that making her food myself is not only simple, but allows me to be in control of the contents.  It also allows her to taste the actual food versus a processed version.

Abby got such enjoyment by feeding her baby!

Summer is very studious and loves her Tobbles.

Lately, she's begun to get up on her knees and rock back and forth.

One afternoon she bounced herself to sleep.

And, bathtime is always more fun together.

K4: Numbers, Shapes and Colors Review, RRSK: Bb and YCR: Unit 7

Saturday, January 19, 2013

Abby is currently 4 years old and Summer is 5.5 months old.

This week was focused on numbers 1-20, shapes and color review.

You can learn more about the K4 Curriculum here, which we are currently using as our base.
Oh..the many ways you can count!

She practiced counting forwards, backwards, skip counting and locating the even/odd numbers.

She wanted to paint her numbers one day and use dot paint the next.  I wonder what her favorite color is?!

 We played with pattern blocks.

And, reviewed shapes and colors...

I've been wanting to try Speekee for awhile now.  It's an online show for children that teaches Spanish and I've read so many good reviews about it.  Anyhow, I finally signed up for the free two week trial and Abby has enjoyed it every day.  She even asks to watch it!  I used the link from 1+1+1=1 which also includes a nice subscription discount.

She completed the second lesson from Draw Write Now: Book One.  Like last week, she asked for me to trace over her pencil drawing with black crayon so it would be easier to color, but she did the rest and to my amazement really enjoys the activity!

And, she built words using the Montessori Words for Kids Lite app.

Bible Verse:
Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.
Pattern practice...

Cutting and pasting her verse in order...

 Unit: 7
find, play, to, run
She was a little disappointed to be on the same sight words this week.  There were a few times I got the whole, "Ugh..these words again..I want new ones."  Needless to say..next week we are moving onto Unit: 8.
Word find by color...
Abby's toy this week was her new science kit.  We did a few experiments, but mainly she poured and transferred water.  To say she enjoyed it would be an understatement.  :-)
We made a volcano..then another and another and yet, another.

Abby's also been having a blast in gymnastics again!

Meanwhile, Summer spent her time studying and exploring...

Banging the ball on the floor...

And, laughing at Abby...
