Simple, Hand-Painted Mother’s Day Gift

Sunday, May 05, 2013

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching and what mom doesn’t love something handmade.  This gift is not only beautiful, but fun and inexpensive!

  • Paint Sponges
  • Assorted Acrylic paint colors
  • Terra cotta planter
  • Potting Soil
  • Flower or Herb

Choose your paint color selection, as many or as few colors as you like.  Take a damp cloth and wipe down the planter.  This will help wipe away any dirt and allow the paint to smoothly adhere to the planter.  Dip your sponge in paint and be creative in your paint application, remembering not to neglect the rim or inside of the pot.

After the paint has dried, add soil and a beautiful flower or herb.

Just a side note, Abby and I both painted a pot at the same time.  I was very conservative with the amount of paint I used (sticking to my 6 colors) and continued in a dabbing fashion until the pot was covered.  On the other hand, Abby was very liberal with her paint application (choosing to peruse all 12 colors available) and used various painting techniques.  Ultimately, I thought her finished project had more depth and beauty.
Whatever your style, be creative and have fun!
